What’s potentially the most effective thing we can do to fight climate change? According to researchers at ETH Zurich: It’s planting trees!
That’s because as trees grow, they absorb and store carbon dioxide emissions, which otherwise drive global warming. The research estimates that a worldwide planting programme could remove two-thirds of all the emissions that have been pumped into the atmosphere so far. It’s a figure scientists describe as “mind-blowing” – read more about that here.
This is worth getting excited about! And it inspired us to take immediate action.
We’re now very happy to announce Inyova is partnered with the organisation One Tree Planted, to support a reforestation project in Kenya’s Kijabe Forest.
The Kijabe Reforestation Project
The Kijabe Forest was once dominated by trees, but only around one-third of the original high-canopy forest still stands today. Increasing pressure for land is a significant threat to the region, leading to the over-extraction of resources and illegal timber harvesting.
Managed by the Kijabe Forest Trust, the project Inyova is supporting has the goal of restoring 5,000 hectares of forest. This project works directly with the local communities to protect, conserve, and restore the forest, helping to safeguard water and other ecosystem services.
One Tree Planted has identified this forest as a high impact area: By planting trees here, we can improve access to sustainable livelihoods by employing community members, promote ecotourism and non-timber forest products, and provide environmental education and advocacy.
In addition, planting trees helps to return stability and nutrients to the soil, improving yields for thousands of smallholder farmers. It also helps to protect the local community’s water supply.
